How to Rebrand and Sell PLR Spreadsheets: A Step-by-Step Guide
Turn a private label rights template into a product that looks like yours: check the license, rebrand the workbook in Excel or Google Sheets, price it with real marketplace fees, and deliver it without support headaches.

What a PLR license usually allows
Private label rights sit between "personal use" and "you own the copyright". You buy a finished spreadsheet once, edit it, put your name on it and sell copies. The table below shows how PLR is typically positioned against the two licenses buyers confuse it with. Always confirm the exact wording in the license you receive.

Pick a template that will actually sell
Evergreen job to be done
Budgets, debt payoff, bookkeeping, trading journals and planners are searched all year. Seasonal ideas (wedding, travel) sell too, but expect peaks and quiet months.
Excel and Google Sheets
Templates delivered in both formats reach twice the audience. Check that formulas work in each app before you buy; some functions differ.
Formula-only workbooks
Macro files trigger security warnings and refunds. Buyers ask whether Excel templates with macros are safe; formula-only files avoid the question.
Built-in guide tab
A first tab that explains setup cuts support messages. If the PLR file has one, keep it and rebrand it; if not, write one before listing.

MAKE IT YOURS
Rebrand the workbook in 7 steps
Work on a copy and keep the original untouched. The steps apply to Excel; the Google Sheets equivalents are noted where they differ.
Change the theme colours once
In Excel, Page Layout → Themes → Colors → Customize Colors and set your two brand colours. Every cell that uses theme colours updates at once. In Google Sheets, use Format → Theme → Customize.
Replace fonts and headings
Pick one heading font and one body font. Avoid fonts that are not installed on most computers; if the buyer's app substitutes a font, your layout shifts.
Add your logo and product name
Insert the logo on the instructions tab and the dashboard only. Rename the product in the title cell, the file name and any footer text. Search the workbook (Ctrl+F) for the previous brand name.
Rewrite the instructions tab
Use your own voice and screenshots. Include a "Start here" list: which cells to fill first, where totals appear and how to reset the sample data.
Clear sample data, keep one example
Deliver a blank version and a filled sample version. Buyers use the sample to understand the logic and the blank one to work.
Protect formulas, not the whole sheet
Lock formula cells and leave input cells editable, then protect each sheet without a password or with a password you publish in the instructions. Test on a clean account
Open the final .xlsx in Excel and upload it to a fresh Google account. Check every tab, print preview and any drop-down lists. What works on your machine may break on a buyer's.

- Promises the file does not keep ("works on mobile") without testing
Digital marketplaces set file size and file count limits per listing; check the current rules for your platform before uploading.
MARGINS, NOT GUESSES
Price it with real marketplace fees
Etsy's public fee policy lists a listing fee of USD 0.20 per listing (charged again each time a multi-quantity listing sells), a 6.5% transaction fee on the item price, a payment processing fee that depends on your bank country, and an Offsite Ads fee of 12–15% only on orders that arrive through Etsy's external advertising. Your own store on Shopify or Gumroad has a different structure, but the method is the same: subtract every per-sale cost, then divide the PLR purchase price by the profit per sale to see how many copies pay it back.
Profit per sale = Price − Listing fee − Transaction fee − Payment fee − Ad fee (if any)
Copies to break even = PLR purchase price ÷ Profit per sale
Example: a USD 49.99 PLR template sold at USD 12.00 on Etsy with a 3% + USD 0.25 processing fee and no ad fee nets about USD 10.41 per sale, so five sales recover the purchase price and the sixth is profit.

Write a listing that answers the buyer's questions
Title = job + format
"Monthly Budget Spreadsheet for Excel & Google Sheets" beats a clever name. Put the outcome first and the format second.
Show the real screens
Use up to ten images: dashboard, input tab, a filled example, a phone or laptop mock-up and a "what's included" card. Screenshots must match the delivered file.
Pre-empt the refund reasons
State the software required, that it is a digital download, whether macros are used and whether it works on mobile. Add a "How you receive it" paragraph.
Ask for the review
A short thank-you note in the Read-Me with a link to leave feedback lifts review counts more than any discount.

PLR spreadsheet questions
What does PLR mean for a spreadsheet template?
Private label rights: you buy the finished workbook once and receive permission to edit it, brand it and sell copies under your own name. The exact permissions are defined in the license file that comes with the purchase.
Can I sell PLR spreadsheets on Etsy?
Etsy allows digital downloads, and most PLR spreadsheet licenses permit marketplace sales. Rebrand the file, take your own screenshots and give buyers a personal-use license. Check both the PLR license and Etsy's current seller policies before listing. Etsy expects digital items to be your own design, so plan real changes, not just new colors: see Can you sell PLR on Etsy?
Do I have to change the template before selling it?
Licenses rarely require it, but unchanged files compete with every other seller of the same template. At minimum change colours, product name, instructions and images.
Can my customers resell the spreadsheet?
No, unless your license explicitly lets you pass on resale rights, which is unusual. Your buyers receive a personal-use license from you.
Should I deliver Excel, Google Sheets or both?
Both, if the template supports it. Deliver the .xlsx file directly and provide a Google Sheets "make a copy" link in a PDF so buyers never edit your master copy.
How many copies do I need to sell to profit?
Divide the PLR purchase price by your profit per sale after fees. Use the calculator in this article; with typical marketplace fees a template bought for around USD 50 and sold at USD 12 breaks even after roughly five sales.
