PLR vs MRR: What the Licenses Mean and Which Digital Products You Can Resell
Private label rights, master resell rights, resell rights and personal use sound similar and are constantly mixed up in Etsy shops and Reddit threads. Here is what each one typically lets you do, how to read the license file, and which one fits a spreadsheet-template business.

Why the license matters more than the product
Copyright belongs to whoever created a digital product, and it does not transfer just because you paid for a download. What you receive is a license: a written permission that lists the things you may do. Two people can buy the same budget spreadsheet, and one of them may sell it under their own name while the other may only use it at home, depending on which license each one bought.
You buy permission, not copyright
The creator keeps the copyright. Your license describes the slice of rights they hand over, and nothing outside that slice.
Rights do not stack automatically
"Resell" does not imply "edit". "Edit" does not imply "pass resell rights to your buyers". Each permission has to be written down.
Your buyers get what you grant
Whatever you sell, you must attach a license for your customer too. It cannot be broader than the one you hold.
Marketplaces add their own rules
A license may allow something that a marketplace's policy restricts. Both have to be satisfied before you list.

PLR: you become the brand
Make it yours and sell it
- Change colours, fonts, wording, tabs and structure
- Add your logo and name as the author
- Sell copies on your site and on marketplaces
- Bundle it with other products
- Use it as a lead magnet or bonus
Pass the PLR itself along
- Sell or give away the PLR license to your buyers
- Claim you created it from scratch (say "designed by" instead)
- Sell the raw, unbranded file exactly as received on a marketplace flooded with the same file
- Reuse the original seller's product images

MASTER RESELL RIGHTS
MRR: you sell the product and the right to resell it
With master resell rights you may sell the product, and your customer receives the right to resell it too. The chain can continue indefinitely, which is why MRR products spread quickly and why prices tend to fall over time. Most MRR licenses do not allow editing, so every seller offers the same file with the same images.
Check what your buyer receives
An MRR license usually specifies whether your buyer gets MRR (can resell and pass on rights), RR (can resell, buyers get personal use) or personal use only. Sell exactly that, not more.
Watch for minimum price clauses
Some MRR sellers set a floor price or forbid giving the product away free to protect the value of the chain.
Know the marketplace stance
Marketplaces set their own rules about reselling digital goods that you did not create or edit. Read the current seller policy of the platform you use before listing MRR products; rules change. For Etsy specifically, see what Etsy's rules allow for PLR products.
Expect price competition
Because every reseller has the same file, differentiation comes from bonuses, support and audience, not from the product itself.

How to read a license file in five minutes
- Find the grant sentenceLook for "you may", "licensee may" or "permitted uses". Everything you are allowed to do is in that list.
- Find the restrictions"You may not", "prohibited", "except". These override the grant. Note anything about marketplaces, bundles, free distribution and price floors.
- Check what your buyer receivesA good license states the end-user terms you must attach. If it is silent, default to personal use only.
- Check attribution and claimsCan you name yourself as the author? Must you credit the source? May you say "exclusive"?
- Check territory, term and transferSome licenses are non-transferable, time-limited or limited to certain platforms.
- Save the license with the productKeep the license, your order receipt and the original download together. If a platform ever asks for proof of rights, you have it.

Which license fits a spreadsheet-template business
You want your own brand
Spreadsheets are easy to restyle: theme colours, logo, instructions tab. PLR lets you build a catalogue that looks like yours and is not identical to every other shop.
You want fast volume
Works for bundles sold as "resell this too" offers. Expect identical listings from other sellers and pressure on price.
You want a simple add-on
Sell a finished product unchanged next to your own. Good for filling a shop quickly; weak for search visibility because the listing is not unique.
You are the end user
If you only need the template for your own finances or business, personal use is the right and cheapest license.

PLR and MRR questions
What is the difference between PLR and MRR?
PLR (private label rights) typically lets you edit, rebrand and sell a product under your own name, while your buyers get personal use. MRR (master resell rights) typically lets you sell the product unchanged and pass the right to resell on to your buyers. PLR is about making the product yours; MRR is about extending the resale chain.
Can I sell PLR and MRR digital products on Etsy?
Many sellers do, and PLR products that have been genuinely rebranded are common in spreadsheet and planner categories. Both the product license and Etsy's current seller policies must allow it; policies change, so read them before listing rather than relying on what other shops do.
Does PLR mean I own the copyright?
No. The creator keeps the copyright. PLR is a license that grants you specific permissions, usually including editing and selling under your brand.
Can my customers resell a PLR product I sold them?
Only if your license allows you to pass resale rights on and you explicitly grant them. By default, give buyers a personal-use license.
Is MRR the same as an affiliate program?
No. An affiliate earns a commission on someone else's sale. An MRR holder sells and delivers the product themselves and keeps the full price, subject to platform fees.
Which license should a beginner choose?
For a shop you intend to grow, PLR is usually the better fit because the edit right lets you create unique listings. MRR suits quick bundle offers where uniqueness matters less.
