Christmas Planning Checklist: What to Do Each Week From Now to December 25
Christmas 2026 falls on a Friday, ten weeks from mid-October. That is enough time to spread the money, the gifts, the travel and the cooking into small weekly jobs instead of one stressful December. Below is the week-by-week list with this year's real dates and shipping deadlines, a hosting checklist, and a planner that builds your own countdown.
THE SHORT ANSWER
When should you start planning Christmas?
Start 10 to 12 weeks before, which in 2026 means mid-October. Not because everything has to be bought early, but because three things get harder or more expensive every week you wait: travel (flights and stays around December 18–28), money (the fewer paychecks left, the bigger each set-aside), and shipping (carriers stop promising delivery before December 25 in mid-December). Everything else (wrapping, baking, decorating) fits in the last five weeks.
10½
74 days until Friday, December 25, 2026.
Nov 26
Black Friday Nov 27, Cyber Monday Nov 30.
Dec 17
Ground Advantage, lower 48, for delivery by Dec 25.
Friday
Christmas Eve is a Thursday; many get both days off.
If you are reading this later, you have not missed Christmas: skip to the week you are in. The planner below moves the most important unfinished tasks into a "catch up" list.
THE CALENDAR
2026 holiday shipping deadlines (send-by dates)
These are the carriers' recommended last days to send a package so it arrives before Christmas. They count from when the carrier first scans the box, not when you print the label, and a store's own "order by" date for gift delivery is usually a few days earlier.
| Carrier and service | Send by (2026) | Note |
|---|---|---|
| USPS Ground Advantage to APO/FPO/DPO | Wed, Nov 4 | Military addresses; First-Class and Priority by Dec 9 |
| USPS international (First-Class Package, Priority Mail International) | Wed, Dec 9 | Priority Mail Express International: Dec 16 |
| FedEx Ground Economy | Tue, Dec 15 | For delivery by Dec 24 |
| USPS Ground Advantage | Thu, Dec 17 | Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, territories: Wed, Dec 16 |
| USPS First-Class Mail (cards, letters) | Thu, Dec 17 | Same date for Alaska and Hawaii |
| FedEx Ground / Home Delivery | Dec 17–23 | Dec 17 for 5-day transit, Dec 23 for 1-day; check your ZIP |

- HOME & FOOD Decide where Christmas happens and who hosts Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

- HOME & FOOD Hosting? Send the date and get a headcount, including dietary needs.

- TRAVEL & MAIL International packages by Wednesday, December 9 (USPS First-Class Package and Priority Mail International).
- TRAVEL & MAIL Mail domestic cards this week so they arrive well before the 25th.

HOSTING
Christmas hosting checklist: dinner for a crowd
Hosting moves most of the work into the last ten days, so it pays to plan it early and cook in stages. Amounts below are common rules of thumb per adult guest; children eat roughly half.
| Item | Per guest | For 8 guests | For 12 guests |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whole turkey | 1 lb (1½ lb for leftovers) | 8–12 lb | 12–18 lb |
| Bone-in ham | ¾ lb | 6 lb | 9 lb |
| Each side dish | about ½ cup | 4 cups | 6 cups |
| Rolls | 2 | 16 | 24 |
| Pie (8 slices each) | 1 slice + extra | 2 pies | 2–3 pies |
| Place settings and chairs | 1 + 1 spare | 9 | 13 |
Make-ahead plan
- ✓2–3 weeks aheadPie crusts, cookie dough, cranberry sauce: freeze.
- ✓2 days ahead (Wed)Casseroles assembled, not baked; gravy base; desserts.
- ✓1 day ahead (Thu)Chop vegetables, set the table, chill drinks, label serving dishes.
- ✓The dayOnly the main, oven sides, gravy and rolls.
Christmas Day timeline (3:00 pm dinner)
- 10:00 Oven to 325°F. A 14–18 lb unstuffed turkey takes about 3¾–4¼ hours.
- 10:30 Turkey in. Start checking the temperature after about 3 hours.
- 2:15 Out when the thickest part of the thigh reads 165°F; rest 20–30 minutes.
- 2:20 Casseroles and rolls into the oven; finish gravy.
- 3:00 Carve and serve.
- 5:00 Leftovers in shallow containers in the fridge, within 2 hours of serving.
Do not have one oven for everything: plan at least one side for the stovetop or slow cooker, and one cold dish. If a guest offers to bring something, give them a specific dish from your list, not "anything".

KEEP IT IN ONE PLACE
Turning the checklist into a Christmas planner spreadsheet
A notebook works until you have twenty gifts, three shipping deadlines and a budget to watch. In Excel or Google Sheets, three tabs cover it: Tasks (task, area, due date, done), Gifts (person, idea, cap, paid, ordered, delivered, wrapped) and Budget (category, planned, spent). A few formulas do the tracking:
| What you want to see | Formula |
|---|---|
| Days until Christmas | =DATE(2026,12,25)-TODAY() |
| Overdue tasks | =COUNTIFS(Tasks!C:C,"<"&TODAY(),Tasks!D:D,FALSE) |
| Spent on gifts so far | =SUM(Gifts!D:D) |
| Left in a budget line | =B2-SUMIFS(Spending!C:C,Spending!B:B,A2) |
| Gifts still not delivered | =COUNTIFS(Gifts!E:E,TRUE,Gifts!F:F,FALSE) |
Add conditional formatting (red when a due date has passed and the box is unchecked) and the sheet tells you what to do next. Keep the file: next year you copy it, change the dates and start from last year's real spending.

FAQ
Christmas planning questions
When should I start planning for Christmas?
About 10 to 12 weeks before, which is mid-October for Christmas 2026. Book travel and set the budget first; gifts, decorating and cooking fit into the last five to six weeks.
What should be on a Christmas planning checklist?
A total budget split by category, a gift list with a cap per person, travel bookings, a card address list, a decor check, the menu and shopping list, carrier shipping deadlines, and a Christmas Day cooking timeline if you host.
What is the last day to ship for Christmas 2026?
USPS recommends sending Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail by Thursday, December 17, Priority Mail by December 18 and Priority Mail Express by December 19 within the lower 48 states. International USPS mail should go by December 9. FedEx Ground Economy is December 15. UPS had not published 2026 dates as of October 12, 2026.
When should I take the turkey out of the freezer for Christmas?
Thaw it in the refrigerator, allowing about 24 hours for every 4 to 5 pounds. For a 16-pound turkey and a Friday, December 25 dinner, move it to the fridge on Monday, December 21.
How much food do I need to host Christmas dinner?
Common rules of thumb per adult: about 1 pound of whole turkey (1.5 pounds for leftovers) or three-quarters of a pound of bone-in ham, about half a cup of each side, two rolls and one slice of pie. For 8 adults that is a 10–12 pound turkey, two pies and 16 rolls.
How do I make a Christmas planner in Google Sheets?
Create three tabs: Tasks with due dates and checkboxes, Gifts with person, cap, paid and delivery status, and Budget with planned and spent per category. Use =DATE(2026,12,25)-TODAY() for a countdown, COUNTIFS for overdue tasks and SUMIFS to show what is left in each budget line.
