ETSY SELLER MATH

How Much Does Etsy Take Per Sale? Etsy Fees Explained (2026)

On a typical US order Etsy keeps about 11% of what the buyer pays, and about 26% when the sale came through an Offsite Ad. This guide breaks one $25 sale into every fee, shows what you actually keep, and gives you a calculator to price your own listings before the holiday rush.

Who this is for: US sellers paid through Etsy Payments in US dollars. Fees are taken from Etsy's own Help Center and Fees & Payments Policy (policy last updated October 5, 2026). Sellers in the UK, EU, Canada and other countries pay a different processing rate and may pay a regulatory operating fee; the structure below still applies, but swap in your country's numbers.

THE FEE LIST

Every Etsy fee a US seller pays in 2026

Three fees hit almost every sale. Two more depend on how the buyer found you and how you get paid.

FeeAmountCharged on
Listing fee$0.20Each listing when published, each automatic renewal every 4 months, and each extra unit sold from a multi-quantity listing
Transaction fee6.5%The order total in your listing currency: item price plus the shipping and gift wrap you charge (not sales tax collected by Etsy)
Payment processing (US)3% + $0.25The total sale price, including shipping and any applicable sales tax
Offsite Ads15% or 12%Only on orders that came from an Etsy ad on Google, Instagram and other sites; 12% once your shop made $10,000+ in the past 365 days; capped at $100 per order
Currency conversion2.5%Only when your listing currency differs from your bank account currency

On top of these, Etsy charges a one-time set-up fee when you open a shop (the amount depends on your location), and optional costs such as Etsy Ads, Etsy Plus ($10 a month) and shipping labels bought through Etsy. Those are business expenses too, but they are not taken from each sale.

WORKED EXAMPLE

One $25 sale with $6 shipping

A buyer in a state with 7% sales tax orders a $25 item. You charge $6 for shipping, so the order total is $31 and Etsy collects $2.17 of sales tax on top. The item costs you $7 to make and the postage label is $5.40.

Etsy's three standard fees come to $3.46, or 11.2% of the $31 the buyer paid you. After materials and postage you keep $15.14. If the same order came from an Offsite Ad, another $4.65 goes to Etsy and you keep $10.49.

Two details catch new sellers. First, the transaction fee applies to shipping as well as the item, so "free shipping" with the cost built into the price and charged shipping cost exactly the same in fees. Second, the processing fee includes the sales tax the buyer pays, even though Etsy sends that tax to the state, not to you.

OFFSITE ADS

Offsite Ads: the fee that changes your margin most

Etsy advertises listings on Google, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and other sites. You pay nothing for the clicks, but if a shopper clicks an ad and buys from your shop within 30 days, Etsy charges a percentage of that order.

UNDER $10,000 A YEAR

15% per attributed order

Applies while your shop's sales over the previous 365 days are below $10,000. You can opt out at any time while you stay under the threshold.

$10,000 AND OVER

12%, and no opt-out

Once your shop reaches $10,000 in 365-day sales, the rate drops to 12% and participation becomes mandatory. Either way, the fee on a single order never exceeds $100.

Whether to stay in is a pricing question. If your margin after the standard fees is thin, a 15% fee can turn a sale into a loss; if your margin is healthy, the ads bring buyers you would not otherwise reach. The calculator below shows both cases for your own numbers.

How to price Etsy listings so the fees are covered

The simplest rule: price from the profit you want, not from what similar shops charge. Fees are mostly percentages, so they grow with your price, and a formula handles that for you.

Order total needed = (cost + postage + target profit + $0.45) ÷ (1 − 0.065 − 0.03 × (1 + tax rate) − ad rate)

Then subtract the shipping you charge to get the item price. The $0.45 is the listing fee plus the fixed processing fee. With a $7 cost, $5.40 postage, a $10 profit target, 7% tax and no ad, the order total needs to be about $25.31 (an item price of $19.31 with $6 shipping); with a 15% Offsite Ad, about $30.35 ($24.35).

01

Know your real unit cost

Materials, packaging, printing and the share of tools or subscriptions per item. Digital products have near-zero unit cost, which is why fees matter less for them.

02

Decide whether to absorb Offsite Ads

If you are opted in, price as if every order carried the fee, or at least the share of your orders that historically do. Your Shop Manager shows which orders were attributed.

03

Remember multi-quantity and renewals

Every extra unit sold in one order costs another $0.20, and an unsold listing renews for $0.20 every four months. Over a year a slow listing costs $0.60 before it sells.

04

Check the holiday discounts

A 25% sale cuts the price but not your cost or postage, so profit falls much faster than revenue. Run the sale price through the calculator before you schedule it.

KEEP SCORE

Tracking Etsy fees in Excel or Google Sheets

Your Etsy Payment account lists every fee, and you can download a monthly CSV from Shop Manager › Finances › Payment account. Paste it into a sheet with columns for Date, Type, Title and Amount and a few formulas show your true monthly cost of selling:

QuestionFormula
Transaction fees this month=SUMIFS(Fees[Amount],Fees[Type],"Transaction*",Fees[Date],">="&DATE(2026,11,1),Fees[Date],"<"&DATE(2026,12,1))
Offsite Ads fees=SUMIFS(Fees[Amount],Fees[Type],"Offsite*")
Fees as % of sales=SUM(Fees[Amount])/SUM(Sales[Order total])
Profit per order=[@[Order total]]-[@Fees]-[@Cost]-[@Postage]

Totals are also what your accountant needs at year end: Etsy fees are a deductible business expense, and the payout report is how you match deposits to sales. Our year-end bookkeeping checklist covers that step, and if you sell digital templates, whether you can sell PLR on Etsy explains the listing rules.

FAQ

Etsy fee questions

How much does Etsy take per sale?

For a US seller, $0.20 to list, a 6.5% transaction fee on the item price plus shipping and gift wrap, and a 3% + $0.25 payment processing fee on the total including sales tax. On a $31 order that is $3.46, about 11%. An order from an Offsite Ad adds 15% (or 12% for shops over $10,000 a year).

Does Etsy charge fees on shipping?

Yes. The 6.5% transaction fee applies to the shipping and gift wrap you charge the buyer, and the processing fee applies to the full order total including shipping.

Can I opt out of Etsy Offsite Ads?

Only while your shop has made less than $10,000 in the past 365 days. Once you reach $10,000, participation is required and the fee drops from 15% to 12% of the attributed order, capped at $100 per order.

How much does it cost to list on Etsy?

$0.20 per listing, charged when you publish it and again every four months if it auto-renews. Selling several units from one listing in one order costs $0.20 for each extra unit.

Are Etsy fees tax deductible?

For most sellers running a business, yes: listing, transaction, processing and advertising fees are ordinary business expenses. Keep the monthly payment account statements and ask your tax professional about your situation.

Why is my Etsy deposit less than my sales?

Fees are deducted from your sales before deposit, and real-time charges such as listing renewals, Etsy Ads and shipping labels come out of your current balance too. The payment account CSV lists each one.
